Party, high commission-style

The first Thursday of every month the Canadian High Commission here in Accra has a party for Canadians and foreign diplomats, so Jason and I went earlier this month.
Here's Jason with the pool in the background (we didn't know there was a pool, although we're told we wouldn't have been allowed to swim in it even if we'd brought our suits!
As far as Canadian parties are concerned it was a bit disappointing. I imagined free Big Rock beer! Swimming in the pool! Listening to the 'Hip!
But, sadly, no free booze: we had to buy tickets for our drinks (although I admit that does harken to the Winnipeg-style social). While we did spy a bottle of Newfoundland Screech, they had no Canadian beer. No Canadian music that I can recall, either. And no going in the pool! Also, their Canadian flag was in pretty rough shape, all drooping from the flagpole, which brought out Jason's outraged inner grandpa.
They did have a BBQ going, though (and offered veggie burgers, very nice) and they had a foosball table which we were allowed to use. The setting was very nice. And auite a few people showed, too -- both Canadians and diplomats from France and Germany that I could identify, and possibly others too who I didn't meet.
We hear the British Embassy has the really hot parties. Maybe we'll try to raise an invitation to theirs through some commonwealthy connection!

I've been following your postings with great interest and just read this entry. I'm actually in Nlfd. on a course and had my own Screech experience last night. Keep up the good work.
